2 km from the historic centre of Évora and 200 metres from the monastery that inspired its name, you will find the Adega Cartuxa [Cartuxa Winery]. This secular building, surrounded by vineyards, was the Jesuit retreat home (Society of Jesus), who lectured at Universidade de Évora [University of Évora] in the 16th and 17th centuries. With their expulsion in 1759 by order of Marquês de Pombal, the property became state property. Later, in 1776, it became an important wine press that absorbed the region’s production, and, in the 19th century, it was acquired by the Eugénio de Almeida family, undergoing renovations and extensions over time, which always respected the richness of its architecture.
